We have just finished watching "Invictus", which deals with rugby, South Africa, and Nelson Mandela. Click here (Biography of Nelson Mandela) and read the texts.
Read these questions, write them down onto your notebook, and answer them:
1. What kind of democracy did mandela pursue?
2. What is the ANC?
3. What is the Apartheid?
4. What happened in March 1960?
5. Where was Mandela imprisoned?
6. If Mandela had been sentenced to life imprisonment, why was he released in 1990?
7. When was he elected president of South Africa?
8. What prizes was he awarded?
Invictus, by William Ernest Henley, is a poem Nelson Mandela used to read when he was in jail. Why do you think it helped him endure all that suffering?
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
As you can see, South Africa National Anthem is made up of 5 different languages. Can you recognise any of the languages in its lyrics?
